Edward Theodore Gein is one of America's most notorious serial murderers and is the direct inspiration for Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho as well as Silence of the Lambs and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The belief system drilled into him by his overbearing mother that women were debased creatures led, after her death, to his desire for sex-reassignment surgery and then to an obsession with deceased female bodies.
